Professor of Aquatic Ecology & Conservation

Dr. John Reynolds, FRSC

I hold the Tom Buell BC Leadership Chair in Conservation and I am also the Chair of COSEWIC - the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. Before I joined SFU in 2005 I was a Professor at The University of East Anglia in Norwich, England from 1993-2005. I had first gone to England for a postdoc at Oxford, where I studied life history evolution through phylogenetically-based studies of birds and fishes.  I did my PhD at the University of Toronto on sexual selection in tropical freshwater fishes. My MSc at Queen’s University in Ontario focused on mating systems of arctic shorebirds, and my BSc was at the University of Toronto. My career in ecology and conservation has always been inspired by my lifelong obsession with natural history and the outdoors.

Celeste Kieran

I am a Phd student researching long-term variation in the marine ecosystem dynamics of Pacific salmon. With access to a fisheries-collected archive of salmon scales (some dating back to 1913) and the use of modern laboratory techniques such as stable isotope analysis, I’m exploring how large-scale climate events and environmental factors influence Pacific salmon foraging patterns in the marine phase of their life-history.

Arianne Nickels

I coordinate much of the day-to-day operations for our research group, from organizing sample processing and training technicians, to maintaining equipment and managing datasets. In particular, I am involved in field work and data management for our long-term monitoring of spawning salmon in our study area in Heiltsuk Territory on the Central Coast of BC. I am also the project manager for the BC Biodiversity Program.
